WASHINGTON, September 2015 – Registration is now officially open for the new 2015-2016 LUNGevity event season, the largest yet in the Foundation’s history. Runners, walkers, and gala goers nationwide will suit up in active or black tie attire and join in the wide array of exciting, awareness-growing activities that support LUNGevity’s lung cancer community and critical lung cancer research.
This year, LUNGevity will also be launching the first ever Breathe Deep Virtual Walk, designed for people in communities without a local walk, or who aren’t available or up for a 5K walk. All Virtual Walk participants will take part in the event on Saturday, November 21, 2015, share photos, and raise funds for research. Participants will be eligible for fundraising incentives through November 21.
“LUNGevity is proud to embark on the largest event season ever to support our efforts in changing outcomes for people diagnosed with lung cancer,”said Andrea Ferris, president of LUNGevity Foundation. “Allowing participants located anywhere in the country to join the Breathe Deep Virtual Walk will further increase awareness of the disease and engage more people in fundraising efforts that directly affect the research progress our survivors depend on.”

About Lung Cancer
- 1 in 15 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetime
- More than 221,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year
- About 60%-65% of all new lung cancer diagnoses are among people who have never smoked or are former smokers
- Lung cancer takes more lives than the next three leading cancers (colorectal, breast, and prostate) combined
- Only 17% of all people diagnosed with lung cancer will survive 5 years or more, BUT if it’s caught before it spreads, the chance for 5-year survival improves dramatically
