WASHINGTON (May 1, 2014) – LUNGevity Foundation announces the Bauer family of Shaker Heights, Ohio – Harriet and her children, seventh grader Greta and fourth grader Owen – as the May LUNGevity Hero for their contributions to the fight against lung cancer. Since 2009, the family has run an after-school lemonade stand every Friday, providing tasty treats to the local community while raising funds for lung cancer research.
Harriet began the lemonade stand to teach her children business skills. But that September, when Harriet’s mother, Lois Karp, passed away from lung cancer, everything changed. Harriet decided to make the lemonade stand not-for-profit, posting a sign that “all proceeds are donated to lung cancer research.”
Originally donating money to a general cancer group, the Bauers were glad to find a foundation that focuses all of its energy on the lung cancer community, from its online resources for survivors and their families to its funded research, spanning 100 research projects at 56 institutions in 23 states for early detection techniques as well as more effective treatments of lung cancer.
“I always say, ‘it’s one quarter at a time’ because everything costs a quarter,” jokes Harriet. “Running the lemonade stand has been a remarkable project for our family, and the community has been with us every step of the way. My mother would be very proud.”
The Bauer family’s weekly “Bauer/Powers Lemonade Stand” lemonade stand serves community members, informing them of the importance of the fight against lung cancer and giving all customers the chance to participate.
